Hurricanes More Than "A Big Wind"
From Tropical Storm to Category 5 Hurricane, the Saffir-Simpson Scale measures the strength of these powerful events. According to Saffir-Simpson, tropical storms are clocked at from 39-73 miles per hour. Beyond that, you've got a full-blown hurricane on your hands. But, the greatest danger in a hurricane is not the wind. It is the storm surge. (Read more)
H1N1 Continues to Spread
Swine Flu Update
The World Health Organization has raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to the continuing spread of the H1N1 virus (commonly called Swine Flu). The Phase 6 designation indicates that a global pandemic is underway. More than 70 countries are now reporting cases of human infection. Many cases have been linked to travel or localized outbreaks without spreading to the wider community. The raising of the alert level by the WHO reflects the spread of the virus and not the severity of the illness caused by the virus.(Read more)

It's too late for the people of Louisiana and the Mississippi coast. Lack of preparedness and the failure of response systems in the wake of Hurricane Katrina are well-known. Today, just the mention of "Katrina" conjures up images of  property devastation and frustrated resource providers. Much good has come from those experiences, however.
